Marcelo Gallardo ends 8-year spell at River Plate

River Plate head coach Marcelo Gallardo has announced that he will not be renewing his contract with the club. As a result, he will be leaving them after eight years in charge, and becoming the most successful manager in their history.

In 422 games with the Argentine side, he won two Copa Libertadores, a South American Cup, three Argentine Cups, a league title and two Argentine Super Cups.

Marcelo Gallardo to leave River Plate in two months

“Last night I informed the club that I will not continue. In December my contract ends and it is one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” Marcelo Gallardo said.

“It has been eight and a half years. I have to thank them for the opportunity and the total freedom they have given me in my work. I thank everyone: players, directors, supporters and all the people who have been with me.

“This is the end of my cycle. From December onwards I will no longer be at the club. It is one of the most difficult decisions of my life.

“I thank a lot of people who have faithfully accompanied this process for eight and a half years. I also thank my coaching staff who pushed me and kept me going so that I could continue in a constant and permanent maelstrom of hard work,” he said.

It now remains to be seen whether he will manage a European club after a very successful spell in his native country.
