Opting not to trigger the extension is in line with the club’s intention to renegotiate Varane’s terms, aiming to bring his wages to a more sustainable level. Additionally, United is working to reduce the salaries of their highest-earning players overall, as part of their strategy to allocate resources for potential new signings next summer and adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and David De Gea, Raphael Varane assumed the position of Manchester United’s highest-paid player. He attained this status after transferring to the club in a £34 million deal from Real Madrid two and a half years ago. Despite concerns about his fitness, Varane continues to play a significant role in Erik Ten Hag’s plans, featuring in United’s last two matches.

Notably, several other players, including Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton, are also set to be out of contract in the summer.
