Mammootty Reveals He Lost Smell and Taste After Health Scare

There’s something deeply moving about a legend being vulnerable. Mammootty — one of Malayalam cinema’s most celebrated superstars — recently broke his silence about a deeply personal health struggle, revealing for the first time that his 2025 illness had robbed him of two of the most human senses: smell and taste. And yes, he is slowly getting them back.

What Happened to Mammootty? The Health Scare Explained

In 2025, Mammootty went on a months-long hiatus from acting — a rare and worrying sight for fans who are used to seeing Mammukka relentlessly on screen. While official sources remained tight-lipped, reports indicated the actor had undergone cancer treatment and made a remarkable recovery.

Now, at a hospital event captured by The Cue Studio, the actor has finally opened up.

Mammootty’s Own Words — A Moment That Hit Hard

Speaking at the event, Mammootty reflected on the gift of the senses that most of us never think twice about. He shared that for a long period, he could not smell or taste anything — and that he is now slowly recovering. He drew a powerful parallel: just as people who can hear take music for granted, those of us who can taste and smell rarely pause to feel grateful.

It’s a reminder that resonates beyond celebrity gossip. Anosmia — the medical term for the loss of the sense of smell — can be caused by various conditions including viral infections, neurological issues, and cancer treatments. It often goes hand in hand with the loss of taste, making even the simplest pleasures of daily life disappear overnight.

The Fighter’s Return

After his recovery, Mammootty wasted no time. He rejoined the shoot of Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan — a highly anticipated spy action drama that marks his reunion with Mohanlal on the big screen after a decade. The star-studded cast also includes Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, and Revathi. The film hits theatres on April 23, 2026.

He also has Padayaatra in the pipeline and a pivotal role in Dhanush’s D55. The man didn’t just survive — he came back swinging.
