Malaysia 4-2 India: Controversial refereeing decisions in Merdeka Cup 2023 game against Blue Tigers

India were defeated by Malaysia 4-2 on their return to the Merdeka Cup after 22 years. The Blue Tigers had a goal scored by Lallianzuala Chhangte disallowed late in the game, which was later found to be a wrong call.

The match got off to a fiery start, with both sides finding the back of the net early. India could have taken the lead after only two minutes, but Rohit’s effort ricocheted off the post. And shortly after, the team found itself behind with Dionjohan Cools executing a brilliant finish.

However, an equaliser from Mahesh allowed the match to return to level terms with both teams playing on the attack. Malaysia then took the lead again with Arif Aiman converting a well taken penalty. He then pressured Mehtab Singh into losing possession before Faisal doubled the hosts’ lead shortly before half time.

Malaysia looked a step above their opponents, and had the goals to show for their dominance. In the second half, Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri was able to pull one back for his side to make it 3-2, with a trademark tap-in finish.

Controversially, Chhangte’a goal near the hour mark was ruled out even though it ended up in the back of the net. The Indian contingent was furious with the decision, which was the height of the appalling standards of refereeing in the game.

The hosts then killed the game with a goal from Corbin, while Chhangte hit the post again after his goal was disallowed. India were evidently unlucky in the game, with several potential goals not converted, including a clear goal disallowed with no proper justification.
