A superhero story about a Yakshi just did something no Malayalam film had ever managed before — and it did it with a nine-week theatrical run that refused to rush.
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, led by Kalyani Priyadarshan and produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, has officially wrapped its theatrical journey with a worldwide gross of exactly Rs. 300 crore. That milestone makes it the first Malayalam film ever to cross the mark, and it now stands as the highest-grossing Malayalam film in Kerala, across India, and worldwide.

Overseas, Lokah trails only L2: Empuraan, but it still claims the record in the biggest international market — the UAE — where it stands as the all-time highest grosser. What’s especially notable is how the film got here: rather than rushing through a typical four-week theatrical window like most South Indian releases, it stayed exclusively in cinemas for nine weeks, adding Rs. 18 crore even after its fourth week alone. That patience paid off directly in the records it eventually broke.

As the first installment in a planned cinematic universe rooted in Kerala folklore, Chandra’s box office run gives the franchise about as strong a launchpad as it could hope for. With Lokah Chapter 2 already confirmed and expected for Onam 2027, expectations for the sequel are understandably sky-high.
