Liverpool have reversed their decision to place some staffs on furlough scheme

All the football clubs around the globe are facing financial problems as the football leagues have been suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The clubs have no earnings right now. They don’t receive profits from match earnings and sponsorship fees. So they are finding it difficult to pay the employees.

Players of many clubs have accepted salary cuts to help their club pay other employees. But for Premier League clubs nothing has been confirmed yet.

UK government introduced a ‘furlough’ scheme in which the staffs who aren’t getting paid by their employers will receive 80% of their salary.

Few days ago, Liverpool decided to place their non-playing staffs on furlough scheme and provide them with the rest of 20% salary in order to ensure they get their full wages. But this decision backfired as many of their former players Jamie Carragher, Danny Murphy and Dietmar Hamann criticised the decision.

Less than six weeks ago, Liverpool announced £42million pre-tax profits. So it was unfair for the Premier League leaders to take advantage of the government’s ‘furlough’ scheme.

Liverpool CEO Peter Moore announced their intentions to find ‘alternative means’ to ensure the club’s employees don’t lose money over this period without football. They have reversed their decision on placing the employees on furlough scheme.

The official statement read: “We believe we came to the wrong conclusion last week to announce that we intended to apply to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and furlough staff. We are truly very sorry for that.”

“Our intentions were and still are, to ensure the entire workforce is given as much protection as possible from redundancy and loss of earnings during this unprecedented period.”

“We are therefore committed to finding alternative ways to operate while there are no football matches being played that ensures we are not applying for the government relief scheme.”
