The Premise: Love, Loss, and a Shared Roof

“Last Summer” is a romance drama that follows a pair of childhood friends as they uncover the long-buried truth about their first love, hidden away like Pandora’s box. The story centers on Baek Do Ha (Lee Jae Wook) and Song Ha Kyung (Choi Sung Eun), whose complicated history and unresolved feelings create the perfect storm for emotional drama and romantic tension.

Breaking Down the Teaser

The Painful Beginning

The teaser opens with a gut-wrenching scene: both Do Ha and Ha Kyung dressed in mourning clothes, suggesting a shared tragedy that may have torn them apart. Ha Kyung’s gaze carries visible resentment as she delivers a devastating line: “Let’s never see each other again.” This opening immediately establishes the tense atmosphere and hints at deep-seated pain between these former friends.

The Unexpected Reunion

As time passes, fate—or perhaps something more deliberate—brings these two souls back together. Ha Kyung questions why Do Ha has returned to Patan, where she lives, and more importantly, why he insists on living with her. Do Ha responds to her understandable hostility with calm indifference, suggesting he’s either incredibly patient or hiding his own emotional turmoil.

Their broken relationship doesn’t seem likely to recover easily, complicated by the fact they’re now involved in a lawsuit over a duplex house. Ha Kyung sends a formal legal notice, while Do Ha hires lawyer Seo Soo Hyuk (Kim Gun Woo) to respond, creating a tense legal standoff that mirrors their emotional impasse.

The Cohabitation Contract

Things take an intriguing turn when Do Ha hands Ha Kyung a cohabitation contract, expressing he looks forward to living together. This marks the beginning of their unconventional shared life under the same roof—a classic K-drama setup that promises awkward encounters, lingering glances, and slowly rekindling feelings.

The teaser delivers a delightfully intimate moment: Ha Kyung peeks at Do Ha through a small hole in the wall (classic!), and Do Ha, seemingly aware of her surveillance, asks, “Can’t sleep?” He finds her predictable behavior endearing, adding that crucial spark of romantic tension that suggests the ice between them is beginning to thaw.

Why This Drama Has Potential

The Chemistry Factor

Lee Jae Wook has proven his romantic leading man credentials in dramas like “Extraordinary You” and “Alchemy of Souls,” bringing both intensity and vulnerability to his roles. Choi Sung Eun, known for her compelling performances, promises to match his energy perfectly. Their on-screen chemistry in the teaser already hints at explosive emotional moments ahead.

The Emotional Complexity

Unlike typical love stories, “Last Summer” starts with a fractured relationship and works backward to explain the wounds while moving forward to healing. This narrative structure creates compelling tension—we’re invested in understanding what went wrong while rooting for them to make it right.

The Cohabitation Trope Done Right

Forced proximity is a beloved K-drama trope for good reason. When done well, it creates natural opportunities for characters to see beyond their defenses, rediscover what drew them together initially, and slowly rebuild trust. The duplex house lawsuit adds a clever twist, making their cohabitation both voluntary and involuntary simultaneously.
