Lee Hyun Wook’s “Great King Munmu” Look: A Lonely Throne, a 600-Year War and One Man’s Vow

Some kings inherit a crown. Others inherit centuries of war. Lee Hyun Wook steps into the second role in the upcoming historical drama The Great King Munmu, and the newly released stills hint at a performance heavy with quiet emotion.

Great King Munmu: The Story Behind the Crown

Directed by Kim Yeong Jo of Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, the drama tells how the small kingdom of Silla outlasted the stronger states of Goguryeo, Baekje and China’s Tang dynasty to unify the Three Kingdoms. If you enjoy the real history behind such stories, the Wikipedia entry on Silla is a great primer before the premiere.

Meet Kim Pom Min: Drama at a Glance

A Ruler Who Bends but Never Breaks

Kim Pom Min is the birth name of the man who becomes Silla’s 30th king. He wins through cool-headed strategy and fierce determination, yet he also knows when to bend for his country. His guiding creed is “Bend, but never break.” He learned diplomacy from his father and battle tactics from his uncle, a combination that shapes the leader he becomes.

Two Faces, One Burden

The stills show two sides of him. In one, a gentle smile and bright, intelligent gaze hint at the warmth he carries before the throne. In another, he looks like a mature king weighed down by responsibility, alone with the burden of ending a war that has lasted 600 years. The production team praises Lee Hyun Wook’s nuanced acting and promises a “desperate and solitary journey” from the very first episode.
