Some directors don’t need to rush. Lee Chang Dong hasn’t released a new film in eight years, and his comeback, “Possible Love,” is already making history — it’s set to world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before landing on Netflix globally.

What’s “Possible Love” About?

The Netflix original follows two couples whose lives become unexpectedly intertwined while making a documentary: a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and her husband. As their paths cross, both couples are forced to confront their contrasting lives and desires they’d rather have kept hidden.

The film stars Jeon Do Yeon, Sul Kyung Gu, Zo In Sung, and Cho Yeo Jeong — a lineup that alone would make this one of the year’s most anticipated Korean releases, even before factoring in Lee Chang Dong’s return to directing.

Why TIFF Is Rolling Out the Red Carpet

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey called Lee Chang Dong a filmmaker of rare depth and precision, someone the festival has repeatedly welcomed both as director and jury member. He described “Possible Love” as a thoughtful exploration of marriage, class, and cinema itself — one that reaffirms the director’s place among today’s finest filmmakers.

The first still from the film shows all four leads — Mi Ok, Ho Seok, Sang Woo, and Ye Ji — standing together on a beach, each seemingly lost in their own thoughts, hinting at the quiet emotional tension running beneath the story.

Following its September 10 world premiere at TIFF, “Possible Love” heads straight to Netflix for a global release.

While waiting, fans can catch Jeon Do Yeon in “Revolver” and Zo In Sung in “Escape from Mogadishu” on Viki.
