It may sound very harsh to hear as a Barcelona fan, but, indeed, Lionel Messi will not be a part of the club as it was declared last night. It was all rumoured that Messi would sign a new 5-year deal at the club on Thursday alongside his father, Jorge Messi, who is his agent also.
However, Messi’s willingness to return to training ground today and eventually play at that Joan Gamper trophy is impossible as FC Barcelona cannot register Messi to LaLiga. Thanks to the strict and weird rules laid by LaLiga, the Spanish top flight will lose the greatest player of all time.
Interestingly, having made such a huge announcement, the club did remove Messi from the squad list on their website and eventually made a farewell video. Still, there’s not even a single word by LaLiga.
The LaLiga remains cold and has posted nothing about Messi’s exit from the league. Not only that, no Barcelona player has bid goodbye to Messi on social media; not even the legends at the club have showered their farewell to the Argentine.
This is a do-or-die move by Laporta towards LaLiga, and it will be interesting to see what he says at the press conference today. If LaLiga loses Messi, then this would be devastating to the Spanish league. So, even though the club has announced Messi’s farewell, everyone keeps a close eye on any announcement by the club or the league.
As discussed by Fabrizio Romano and TalkFCB, this is a penultimate move by the club, which clearly stated that it is LaLiga who is stopping to register Messi into the league. Obviously, if Messi goes away, that would totally damage LaLiga’s streaming rights and the kind of money it gets to have Leo Messi play in the league.
Premier League or Ligue 1 have no such weird rules as LaLiga have, and so if Messi leaves either, he would end up at Manchester City or PSG, bringing glory to their leagues, respectively. So, it’s up to LaLiga to decide what they want, and today would be an absolutely crucial day to judge Lionel Messi’s future at the club.
