Kit Harington Replaces Nicholas Hoult As Lockhart In HBO’s Harry Potter — Here’s Why He Said Yes

Big casting shake-up alert! Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is officially stepping into the wizarding world, taking over the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s Harry Potter series — and he’s doing it despite the swirling controversy around author J.K. Rowling.

Here’s everything you need to know about the switch, why Harington wanted the role, and what it means for the show’s future.

What Happened With The Lockhart Casting?

HBO originally announced Nicholas Hoult for the role on August 11, 2026. Just two weeks later, the studio confirmed Harington would take over instead, citing scheduling conflicts. Lockhart, the vain Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, was famously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film.

Why Kit Harington Wanted The Role?

Speaking to USA Today, Harington explained his decision came from a lifelong love of the books, saying he’d been a fan since childhood and rediscovered the series as an adult through audiobooks. He’d already voiced Lockhart in Audible’s full-cast audio edition of Chamber of Secrets, released in December 2025 — clearly good practice for the TV role.

He also said the HBO format excites him because it can dig deeper into the source material than the original film franchise ever could, calling it a “great idea” for book purists like himself.

The Ongoing Rowling Controversy

The series hasn’t escaped criticism. Beyond questions about whether another adaptation is even necessary after the 2001–2011 film franchise, the show has faced backlash tied to Rowling’s stance on transgender issues — with directors Kate Herron and Ally Pankiw reportedly turning down offers to work on the project over her comments. Rowling remains attached as an executive producer.
