Kit Connor Cast as Cyclops: Heartstopper Star Joins Marvel’s X-Men Reboot

Marvel’s mutant lineup just got a major addition. Kit Connor, the breakout star of Netflix’s Heartstopper, has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated X-Men reboot. The casting news, first broken by Deadline, has sent fans into a frenzy as the studio continues assembling its new team of mutants.

Kit Connor’s Cyclops: Quick Facts

How Kit Connor Landed the Role

Sources tell Deadline that Kit Connor is the choice for the mutant Cyclops, following a casting process similar to the one that landed Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, where director Jake Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige met with a number of candidates before making their decision. The trade reports that a small group of actors tested after the Fourth of July holiday, and after considerable back and forth, Marvel ultimately landed on Connor as the choice to play Summers.

It had previously been reported that Marvel’s X-Men movie was eyeing Drew Starkey for Cyclops, but that casting evidently didn’t pan out, making Connor’s landing of the role even more notable given the competitive process involved.

Who Is Kit Connor?

Connor is an English actor who rose to international fame as Nick Nelson in Netflix’s Heartstopper. He began his career as a child actor, notably playing a young Elton John in the 2019 biopic Rocketman, and has since built an impressive and varied filmography. He has also appeared in His Dark Materials, Warfare, and voiced Brightbill in DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot.

Connor is set to return in the upcoming feature continuation, Heartstopper Forever, proving his star continues to rise well beyond the Netflix series that first put him on the map.

Understanding the Character

Introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963’s The X-Men #1, Scott Summers is one of Marvel’s most iconic mutants and the longtime field leader of the X-Men. Born with the ability to unleash devastating optic blasts from his eyes, Scott relies on a ruby-quartz visor to control his powers. As Professor Charles Xavier’s first student, Cyclops is renowned for his tactical brilliance and unwavering sense of duty.

Cyclops was previously played by James Marsden in Fox’s original X-Men trilogy and Tye Sheridan in the franchise’s more recent installments. Marsden will reprise the role once more in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, creating an interesting bridge between the old and new cinematic mutant universes.

Marvel’s Growing Mutant Roster

Kit Connor joins an increasingly stacked cast for the X-Men reboot. He’ll star alongside Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving as Emma Frost; Sadie Sink has already joined the MCU as Jean Grey, as revealed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. There have also been rumors that Charles Melton may play Beast and Cailee Spaeny is up for the role of Rogue.

Why This Casting Matters

Marvel’s new X-Men project gained momentum after Schreier was tapped to direct, followed by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo being hired to pen the script. With this level of creative talent behind the camera, expectations for the reboot remain extraordinarily high among longtime fans of the franchise.

At just 22 years old, Connor lines up well age-wise with his fellow mutants, with Jean Grey star Sadie Sink also just 24. This youthful casting suggests Marvel is building toward a fresh, generationally distinct take on the X-Men.

Final Thoughts

Kit Connor’s casting as Cyclops marks a significant milestone in Marvel’s ambitious X-Men reboot, further solidifying a talented, youthful ensemble poised to reintroduce these iconic mutants to a new generation of fans. As casting continues to round out, all eyes remain on Marvel Studios for the next major announcement in this highly anticipated franchise relaunch.
