KHxRK Shoot Date Confirmed? Anirudh Reveals Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan Film Goes on Floors in 2027

Indian cinema fans, take a deep breath — the dream reunion we’ve all been waiting for is getting closer to reality. Music maestro Anirudh Ravichander has just dropped a major update about the most anticipated Tamil film in decades: the Rajinikanth x Kamal Haasan collaboration, officially titled KHxRK.

What Did Anirudh Say?

Speaking to India Today Digital, Anirudh — who is scoring music for the project — shared his read on the filming timeline. He revealed that shooting will likely kick off in 2027, and described the entire experience of being attached to the film as nothing short of surreal. Growing up watching both legends separately, he admitted he never imagined he’d one day see them share a set together.

This isn’t just hype from an excitable musician, either. Anirudh has already appeared alongside director Nelson Dilipkumar and the two leads in the film’s official promo, which featured the background track Aaja Raja and broke the internet within hours of release.

Why This Reunion Is Such a Big Deal

This is not just another multi-starrer. Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan last appeared together in the 1979 Tamil film Allauddinum Albhutha Vilakkum — that’s a 47-year gap. Both have since grown into once-in-a-generation superstars, each with a cult following that cuts across generations and geographies. The fact that they are coming together now, with a director like Nelson at the helm and a reported budget north of ₹500 crore, signals this is being treated as a cinematic event, not just a film.

The story is said to be a friendship-driven, slice-of-life narrative — a departure from what you might expect given the star power involved. If that’s accurate, it could make for something genuinely special. Learn more about the history of Tamil cinema to understand just how seismic this reunion truly is.

What Are the Stars Doing Meanwhile?

Rajinikanth will next be seen in Jailer 2 (also directed by Nelson) alongside Vidya Balan, Mohanlal, and Mithun Chakraborty, and will shoot Thalaivar173 from April 2026. Kamal Haasan, meanwhile, is set for KH237 and has begun shooting for Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 — so both legends are anything but idle while the KHxRK machine gets ready to roll.
