Khalifa Onam Release August 20: Prithviraj Asks Mohanlal to Play Grandfather After Playing His Father – Exclusive Interview Breakdown

In a charming revelation that delighted Malayalam cinema fans, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran disclosed how he personally approached superstar Mohanlal for a cameo role in his upcoming film Khalifa. The witty pitch—”You played my father before. Now, how about playing my grandfather?”—perfectly captures the warmth of their professional relationship and the ambitious storytelling scope of this gold-trading actioner hitting theaters on August 20, 2026.

The Clever Casting: Prithviraj’s Pitch to Mohanlal

During an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Prithviraj explained the organic evolution of the grandfather character. He revealed that while narrating the script initially, the makers envisioned expanding this role into a full story arc. After completing the first London schedule, their confidence soared. Prithviraj then made his charming phone call to Mohanlal. The response was immediate and gracious: “Being the sweetheart that he is, he said, ‘Of course, son.'”

This simple yet heartfelt exchange showcases the respect between two generations of Malayalam cinema’s finest actors, hinting at a creative partnership that could define Malayalam cinema’s future multi-part franchises.

Khalifa Onam: The Gold Empire Actioner

The film follows Aamir Ali, protagonist of a sprawling gold-trading empire spanning the Middle East, London, Nepal, and Kerala. This legacy business comes with immense responsibility and intricate family dynamics. Prithviraj’s character must navigate tradition, ambition, and generational expectations while managing a vast enterprise shaped by his grandfather Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali’s foundational vision.

A Franchise-Building Strategy: From Part 1 to Prequel

What makes this project particularly ambitious is the franchise blueprint already in place. Khalifa: Part 1 focuses on Aamir’s contemporary journey managing the empire. However, Khalifa: Part 2 is being conceptualized as a prequel set in the 1970s, diving deep into Mohanlal’s character’s origin story—the establishment of this legendary gold-trading dynasty.

This two-part structure allows both films to explore legacy from different temporal perspectives, enriching the narrative universe and offering Malayalam audiences a sprawling cinematic saga they’ve rarely experienced.

Director Vysakh’s Vision

Directing this ambitious project is Vysakh, an action specialist who brings technical precision and storytelling maturity to the material. The screenplay by Jinu V. Abraham (who also serves as co-producer) carefully balances family drama with high-octane action sequences, genre elements suited to both contemporary and period narratives.
