Kathanar: The Wild Sorcerer — Key Details

What Makes This Trailer So Special?

The nearly 3-minute teaser presents a different take on the folklore setting — drawing inspiration from European horror and Gothic dark fantasy, Kathanar is a retelling of the legendary tale of the priest Kadamattathu Kathanar, rather than a direct adaptation of existing stories.

The visuals are striking. Real locations blend with heavy CGI and VFX, the costumes feel globally ambitious, and the tone is unlike anything Malayalam cinema has attempted at this scale. It’s less a regional film and more a pan-India, pan-world fantasy epic with a deeply Indian soul.

The film explores the story of Kadamattathu Kathanar, a priest from Kerala folklore believed to have lived in the 9th century who, according to legend, possessed immense magical powers used for the welfare of common people. Learn more about Kerala’s rich folk traditions on Wikipedia

Anushka Shetty’s Historic Malayalam Debut

This teaser also marks a landmark moment — Anushka Shetty, the Bahubali star beloved across South Indian cinema, steps into Malayalam for the first time, appearing as the film’s co-lead. Her presence alongside Jayasurya, supported by an ensemble that also includes Prabhu Deva, Nitish Bharadwaj, and Sandy Master, makes Kathanar one of the most star-studded South Indian releases in recent memory.
