Why Do Kabaddi Players Rub Their Hands With Soil Before a Raid?

Watch any kabaddi match closely and you’ll see it before almost every raid: the raider crouches, scoops up a handful of soil from the court, rubs it between their palms, and sometimes touches it to their forehead or chest. It looks ritualistic — and it partly is — but there’s a very practical reason behind it too.

Why Do Kabaddi Players Rub Their Hands With Soil Before a Raid?

The practical reason: grip

Kabaddi is played barehanded and barefoot, often in humid conditions where players sweat heavily within minutes. Sweaty palms make it harder to grip an opponent’s hand, wrist, or ankle during a tackle or a raid — and kabaddi is a sport decided entirely by grip and hand-to-hand contact. Rubbing soil onto the palms works like natural chalk: it soaks up sweat and moisture, giving the player a firmer, drier grip going into contact.

The traditional and emotional layer

Kabaddi has deep roots in rural India, traditionally played on open mud courts rather than indoor mats. For many players, touching the soil is also a gesture of respect — to the ground the sport was born on, and in some cases a superstitious or spiritual habit similar to a cricketer touching the pitch or a footballer kissing the badge. It’s the same instinct that makes many Indian sportspeople touch the ground and then their heart before a big moment: a mix of humility, superstition, and mental preparation.

Why it’s stayed even on modern surfaces

The Pro Kabaddi League and other professional competitions now play on synthetic mats, not actual soil courts — yet the gesture has stuck around, sometimes symbolically (touching the mat itself) even when there’s no loose soil to rub. That’s a strong sign the ritual has become as much about focus and tradition as it ever was about grip.

The takeaway

The soil-rubbing habit in kabaddi is a rare case of a sports ritual that’s genuinely both functional (better grip, less sweat) and traditional (respect for the game’s rural roots) — which is why it’s survived the sport’s move from mud courts to modern arenas.
