Sevilla have parted ways with head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar after the disastrous start to their season. The 62-year-old was signed in March to help the club avoid relegation, and compete in the Europa League.Â
He eventually helped them win the tournament for a record extending seventh time, while also avoiding relegation. But things have not changed for the club in the new campaign, which has forced the board to pull the trigger and relieve the Europa League winning coach of his duties.
Jose Luis Mendilibar sacked by Sevilla eight games into the seasonÂ
The record Europa League winners are currently 14th in the table, earning eight points from eight league games and registering only two wins so far. And to avoid another relegation scramble this year, the club is looking to change things during the two-week international break.
Former Athletic Club manager Marcelino has been linked with the job, after he was recently dismissed by Marseille. Andoni Iraola has also been rumoured as one of the options to replace Jose Luis Mendilibar, but Bournemouth might not let him go at this point.Â
Sevilla have not had much luck in the Champions League as well, drawing their first two games with Lens and PSV Eindhoven. They will need to put on a better performance when they face group leaders Arsenal, and could use the momentum from the arrival of a new manager to steer them towards that direction.
