Football World Mourns as Jorge Messi, Father and Longtime Agent of Lionel Messi, Passes Away at 68

Football is pausing to grieve alongside one of its greatest icons. Jorge Messi, father and longtime representative of Lionel Messi, passed away early Saturday morning at a medical clinic in Rosario, Argentina, after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed.

A Constant Presence Behind the Legend

Jorge accompanied his son through every stage of his career, from Lionel’s earliest days in Rosario through his rise at Barcelona and beyond, serving as his representative for several years. Speaking previously about their bond, Messi once said he always needed his father’s approval, asking for his thoughts after every match since childhood.

Tributes Pour In

Newell’s Old Boys, Lionel’s boyhood club, paid tribute on social media, honouring Jorge as the steady, behind-the-scenes support behind every step of his son’s career. The Argentine Football Association also expressed its sadness, offering condolences to the family, while UNICEF acknowledged Jorge’s long-standing commitment to children’s welfare through the organization.

A Health Battle Kept Private

Jorge’s illness first became public during the 2026 World Cup, when Messi broke down in tears after scoring in Argentina’s opening match, later explaining the emotion was tied to personal matters rather than football. Messi had spent time with his father following the tournament before rejoining Inter Miami. Full statements from the football community continue to emerge via FIFA’s official website.
