Interestingly, Tottenham Hotspur held a first option to sign Cardoso for approximately £21 million—an arrangement that stemmed from the previous Giovani Lo Celso transfer deal. However, that exclusive window to activate the clause has passed without Spurs taking action.

This clause not only gave the Premier League club the first right to negotiate, but also secured them a reported 20% sell-on fee should Cardoso be transferred elsewhere. While some Spurs fans speculated that Cardoso outright rejected a move to North London, no credible report has confirmed such a refusal.

In March, the player himself addressed the rumors of Tottenham’s interest: “I can’t lie, and it’s true that it’s something that gives me confidence, that makes me feel valued because I’m doing a good job…However, right now my focus is only on Betis. This season we have important things to think about.”

His statement suggested appreciation without distraction—a sign of a focused professional who kept his commitment to Betis through the business end of the campaign.
