Michael Fassbender Transforms Into Joe Kennedy Sr. — Netflix’s Most Anticipated Period Drama Is Already Stunning

Netflix’s upcoming biographical series Kennedy just gave us our most exciting behind-the-scenes glimpse yet — and honestly, it looks like prestige television gold.

Fresh set photos from Liverpool show Michael Fassbender fully embodying the role of Joe Kennedy Sr., patriarch of America’s most iconic political dynasty. Dressed in a crisp grey overcoat, dark fedora, and round wire-rimmed glasses, Fassbender looks like he just walked out of the 1940s.

What Is Netflix’s Kennedy Series About?

The show promises an intimate portrait of the Kennedy family — their loves, rivalries, and tragedies — starting in the 1930s. Season 1 focuses on Joe and Rose Kennedy’s rise to prominence and their nine children, including a young Jack Kennedy struggling to escape his older brother’s shadow.

A Star-Studded Cast to Watch

The ensemble is genuinely staggering. Beyond Fassbender, the series features Laura Donnelly as Rose Kennedy, Nick Robinson as Joe Kennedy Jr., and Joshua Melnick as young Jack Kennedy. Historical figures are portrayed by Eddie Marsan (J. Edgar Hoover), Toby Huss (FDR), Wyatt Russell (Charles Lindbergh), and Imogen Poots as Gloria Swanson.

If you love Netflix’s best upcoming dramas of 2026, this cast alone should have you hooked.

Liverpool Doubles as 1940s America

One of the coolest production details? Liverpool’s streets near the iconic Liver Building were transformed into mid-century America — complete with vintage yellow-and-red taxi cabs and a meticulously crafted retro newsstand. A headline on the newsstand’s board references D-Day, hinting at a pivotal WWII-era storyline.

This level of detail in set design signals Netflix is investing heavily in making Kennedy an awards-season contender. Fans of big-budget Netflix originals should mark this one early.
