João Cancelo Returns to Barcelona Permanently After Sacrificing Al-Hilal Salary – “It Was Barça or Nothing”

Speaking to the media immediately upon landing in Barcelona, Cancelo detailed the blunt conversation he had with sporting director Deco regarding his steadfast commitment to the club: “I told Deco: Either I come here, or I’ll stay there for a year without playing while continuing to receive my salary.”

The message was unmistakable. To push the termination through, he also had to make major financial concessions, giving up part of his salary, with his choice being “either signing for Barcelona or nothing.”

The quote went viral almost immediately — and for good reason. Cancelo was not just expressing desire; he was backing it up with real financial sacrifice.

How the Deal Got Done

Al-Hilal had initially wanted a fee of around €10–15 million for the defender, who was under contract until 2027. Weeks of tense back-and-forth followed, with no clear resolution in sight.

Several factors ultimately pushed the deal toward a contract termination: Cancelo’s desire to leave, the sheer number of foreign players in Al-Hilal’s squad, and his strained relationship with Italian coach Simone Inzaghi.

Barcelona initially explored purchasing the defender outright from Al-Hilal, with transfer discussions centred around a €10 million fee. However, both sides scrapped the financial negotiation in favour of a clean contract termination, allowing the Spanish side to secure him without paying a transfer fee.

Cancelo agreed to forfeit a substantial portion of his remaining salary to secure his immediate departure from Saudi Arabia.

Cancelo, 32, joins as a free agent having previously spent two loan spells with the Spanish champions, in 2023–24 and again last season.

However, he is unlikely to be the last, with Barça still pursuing a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, and potentially a centre-back.
