What’s the Story About?

“The Judge Returns” follows Lee Han Young, a corrupt judge who spent years as a puppet for a powerful law firm. When he mysteriously travels 10 years back in time, he gets an extraordinary second chance to rewrite his story. Armed with future knowledge and burning determination, Lee decides to use the law as his weapon to punish the powerful evils he once served.

Think of it as a legal thriller meets time-travel redemption arc. Ji Sung’s character isn’t starting as a hero—he’s a morally compromised man given a rare opportunity to correct his mistakes and fight for justice instead of bending to corporate interests.

The Powerful Teaser Poster

MBC’s first promotional poster is striking and symbolic. A blood-stained knife is driven deep into a thick law book, creating a visceral image that perfectly captures the drama’s central conflict. The tagline “Justice that stands against the blade” emphasizes the show’s core theme: using law as a shield and weapon against corrupt power.

The production team explained their artistic choice: “We visualized the core emotions by capturing the moment when the law book, symbolizing the judge, meets the knife aimed at Lee Han Young.” It’s a powerful metaphor showing justice standing firm even when threatened by violence and corruption.

The dark, intense imagery suggests this won’t be a lighthearted legal procedural. Expect moral complexity, high stakes, and probably some brutal confrontations as our protagonist takes on the system he once served.

Why Ji Sung is Perfect for This Role

Ji Sung has proven himself as one of Korea’s most versatile actors, capable of portraying complex, morally ambiguous characters. His previous legal drama “The Devil Judge” showcased his ability to play characters operating in ethical gray zones while keeping audiences completely invested.

His filmography includes psychological thrillers, romantic comedies, and intense dramas—all performed with charismatic depth. In “The Judge Returns,” he’ll need to portray a character wrestling with past corruption while fighting for redemption, which plays directly to his strengths as an actor who excels at internal conflict.

What to Expect from This Legal Thriller

Based on a web novel, the drama has source material that’s already proven popular with readers. Web novel adaptations have become increasingly sophisticated in Korean television, often featuring intricate plots and satisfying character development.

The time-travel element adds fascinating possibilities. Lee Han Young knows which cases matter most, which criminals will escape justice, and exactly how the corrupt system operates. His challenge isn’t just legal expertise—it’s navigating relationships and situations where he has insider knowledge but must act without revealing his secret.

The premise also promises examination of Korea’s legal system, corporate corruption, and the moral compromises people make for career advancement. These themes resonate strongly with Korean audiences who’ve followed high-profile corruption cases involving powerful firms and compromised judges.

MBC’s 2026 Kickoff

MBC is clearly confident in this project, positioning it as their first major drama of 2026. The Thursday 9:40 PM slot is prime real estate for Korean broadcasters, typically reserved for ambitious productions they believe will attract significant viewership.

For fans of Korean dramas and legal thrillers, “The Judge Returns” looks like essential viewing. While waiting for January, you can catch Ji Sung in his previous courtroom drama “The Devil Judge” on Viki or explore more K-drama news on MBC’s official site.
