Former Germany international Jerome Boateng is set for a new chapter in Turkish football. The World Cup winner has agreed to join Trabzonspor as assistant coach, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, joining the technical staff of fellow German Thomas Reis.
The Deal
Trabzonspor have reached an agreement with Boateng to join the club’s coaching staff, according to Romano, who confirmed the deal was “done.” The move brings Boateng into the setup led by Thomas Reis, who was appointed Trabzonspor head coach in mid-September 2026. According to Turkish outlet 61 Saat, the appointment followed negotiations that had been ongoing for some time, with Trabzonspor’s management finalising terms after discussions held in the preceding week. Reports also indicate the club had previously pursued Markus Gellhaus, a longtime collaborator of Reis, for the same role before that move fell through, paving the way for Boateng’s arrival.

Why Boateng Was Chosen
The decision to bring in Boateng reportedly came at Reis’s specific request, with the German coach identifying his former international teammate as an important figure to add to his technical staff. The appointment arrives at a strong moment for the club, coming shortly after a standout performance from Mohamed Salah helped Trabzonspor secure a 4-0 win over Galatasaray in the Turkish league before the international break.
Boateng’s Career
Boateng won the 2014 World Cup with Germany as part of a 76-cap international career that also yielded one goal and five assists. At club level, he enjoyed spells at some of Europe’s biggest sides, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City, before later playing for Lyon, Salernitana, and LASK Linz. He retired from playing in autumn 2025. This marks his second coaching role since stepping away from the pitch, having previously worked as an assistant with LASK’s second team in Austria.
Why It Matters
For Trabzonspor, bringing in a decorated former international with World Cup-winning pedigree adds considerable experience to Thomas Reis’s backroom staff as the club looks to build on its strong recent form, including the emphatic win over Galatasaray. For Boateng, the move represents a meaningful step up in his fledgling coaching career, moving from a second-team role in Austria to a first-team assistant position in a competitive European league.
