Every shared superhero universe eventually answers one big question: what’s it all building toward? For Marvel, it was Thanos and the Avengers. For James Gunn’s DCU, a recent social media exchange suggests the endgame might be something far less predictable — and a lot more fun.

Rather than assembling the classic Justice League lineup fans expect, growing evidence points toward Justice League International, a quirkier, workplace-comedy version of the team that trades apocalyptic stakes for chaos, banter, and bureaucracy.

What Sparked the Theory

James Gunn has long described the DCU as following an eight-to-ten-year plan, treating each film and show as a chapter building toward something larger. That larger plan got a lot clearer recently when Gunn responded to a fan question on Threads about Maxwell Lord’s morality, specifically referencing the comic run Justice League International as inspiration for his version of the character, according to The Direct’s analysis. That single namedrop is the strongest clue yet about where the DCU is actually headed.

This lines up with earlier comments from DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, who confirmed the studio isn’t rushing to assemble the classic Justice League and wants to get the story right before bringing the team together.

The Justice Gang Was the First Clue

The groundwork has quietly been laid since Superman (2025), which introduced the Justice Gang — Maxwell Lord’s team of mid-tier heroes including Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Mister Terrific, assembled more for public image than world-saving. That setup mirrors the actual Justice League International comics, where Lord runs the team like a business, trading regulation for government backing rather than fighting universe-ending threats.

Peacemaker Season 2 doubled down on this tone, portraying Lord, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl running recruitment interviews with the same workplace-comedy energy the JLI comics were known for.

Why This Makes Sense for the DCU

Going the JLI route lets DC Studios sidestep the old DCEU mistake of throwing heroes together for a single team-up movie without building their dynamic first. With characters like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, and Mister Miracle already entering the DCU — all of whom have JLI comic ties — the pieces increasingly look intentional rather than coincidental.

FAQs

1. What is Justice League International, and why might it be the DCU’s endgame? Justice League International is a lighter, comedic take on the Justice League from the comics, led by Maxwell Lord, and recent hints from James Gunn suggest it may be the true direction of his DCU rather than the classic superhero lineup.

2. Has the classic Justice League been confirmed for the DCU? No — as of August 2025, James Gunn confirmed the DCU does not yet have a classic Justice League, and the Justice Gang introduced in Superman is not considered the same team.
