Ja Morant’s Failed Poster Dunk: Why NBA Fans Question His Elite Status

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant once electrified arenas with gravity-defying dunks, but Sunday’s botched poster attempt on Thunder’s 7-footer Isaiah Hartenstein has fans questioning whether the explosive guard has lost his athletic edge.

NBA Failed Dunk That Sparked Controversy

During the Grizzlies’ 114-100 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Morant attempted a highlight-reel dunk in transition, taking off just inside the free throw line. What should have been a viral moment turned into an embarrassing miss as Hartenstein perfectly timed his contest, stopping Morant mid-flight.

Ja Morant’s Alarming 2024-25 Statistics

Against OKC specifically, Morant managed just 11 points on a dismal 3-of-18 shooting, going scoreless in the fourth quarter (0-for-3) while committing two crucial turnovers as Memphis squandered a 19-point lead.

Social Media Erupts Over Morant’s Decline

NBA fans didn’t hold back after witnessing the failed dunk attempt. “If you thought his trade value was low before…” one fan tweeted, referencing recent trade rumors surrounding the Grizzlies. Another brutally commented, “You’re not that guy anymore, pal. Pack it up.”

The most creative reaction? “The jump stopped loading at 64%” perfectly captured the visual of Morant falling short of his destination—a far cry from the fearless dunker who once posterized defenders with ease.

What’s Wrong with Ja Morant?

The numbers paint a concerning picture. Morant’s shooting 35.8% from the field—a career low—and an abysmal 14.8% from three-point range through 10 games. Yet he’s attempting 5.4 threes per game, settling for shots rather than attacking the rim with his signature explosiveness.

Memphis ranks in the bottom six offensively (110.6 rating) when their star guard should be elevating them. The Grizzlies have lost three straight games and risk missing the playoffs for consecutive seasons if this trajectory continues.

Morant Remains Unfazed

Despite the criticism, Ja maintains confidence in his approach. “That’s why I don’t get too frustrated because I be in this arena, I be in the practice gym doing the same thing,” Morant told reporters via beat writer Damichael Cole. “Right now it’s just continuing to shoot with confidence and wait for it to translate over.”

Whether that confidence is justified remains to be seen. The Grizzlies need their franchise player to rediscover the athleticism and efficiency that made him an All-Star, or Memphis risks another disappointing season.
