IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Season 2 Officially Renewed at HBO, With Bill Skarsgård in Focus

HBO has officially renewed IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Season 2, confirming that the Stephen King prequel is heading back to the terrifying town for another chapter. The renewal was announced on August 17, 2026, with the next season set much earlier in Derry’s bloody history. Trade coverage tied to the announcement also points to Bill Skarsgård remaining the key face of Pennywise as the franchise moves forward.

What Is Confirmed About Season 2?

Season 2 will move from the first season’s 1962 setting to 1935, shifting the story into Depression-era Derry. HBO’s official logline says the new chapter centers on the Bradley Gang massacre, following a group of bank robbers who stop in town for ammunition and instead encounter unimaginable horror. The renewal also confirms that Brad Caleb Kane will serve as showrunner for the new season.

That timeline jump is a major clue about the shape of the next story. Rather than simply continuing the exact same chapter, IT: WELCOME TO DERRY is digging deeper into the town’s cursed past and the cycles of violence surrounding Pennywise. It also matches comments previously made by Andy Muschietti, who spoke about a broader multi-season plan tied to key events from Stephen King’s mythology.

IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Season 2 at a Glance

The quick facts below are based on HBO’s renewal announcement and same-day trade reporting.

Why the Renewal Matters

This was not a routine pickup. HBO’s official announcement said the series has ranked among the top four global series premieres in HBO Max history since its debut. That strong performance clearly gave the network confidence to keep expanding the IT universe after the first eight-episode season.

The first season originally premiered on October 26, 2025, and served as a prequel to the hit films It and It Chapter Two. Developed for television by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, the series expands the world first built in Stephen King’s novel and then popularized again by the blockbuster movie adaptations.

Bill Skarsgård and Pennywise’s Importance

Bill Skarsgård remains one of the biggest reasons fans are invested in this universe. He famously played Pennywise in the two films and reprised the role for the series. Around the Season 2 renewal, multiple entertainment outlets continued to frame Pennywise — and Skarsgård’s presence — as central to the franchise’s next chapter, even though HBO’s formal renewal note focused more on story, setting, and creative leadership than a full cast sheet.

HBO’s own statement is especially telling here. Sarah Aubrey, head of HBO Max original programming, said Season 2 will deepen the terror, mystery, and Pennywise lore that viewers love. That makes it clear the character remains at the heart of the series — and Bill Skarsgård’s association with the role continues to be one of its biggest hooks.

Creative Team Behind the Horror

The series continues to be backed by heavyweight horror talent. Andy and Barbara Muschietti remain executive producers, and the show is produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. That continuity matters because it keeps the TV series tied closely to the tone and mythology of the hit films.

Just as importantly, the move to 1935 gives the writers a fresh historical canvas. Reports around the renewal describe a harsher, bleaker Derry shaped by poverty, desperation, and social unrest — a setting that could make Pennywise’s next round of terror even darker than before.
