Is ‘Goodbye June’ Worth Your Time? Kate Winslet’s Netflix Debut Review

Kate Winslet steps behind the camera for the first time with Goodbye June, a deeply personal family drama now streaming on Netflix. But does this Oscar winner’s directorial debut live up to expectations? Let’s dive into whether this Christmas release deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Goodbye June Movie Snapshot

A Family Project Born from Personal Loss

Goodbye June carries extraordinary emotional weight as a true family affair. The screenplay comes from Winslet’s 22-year-old son, Joe Anders, who wrote it as coursework at Britain’s National Film & Television School. The subject matter hit incredibly close to home—the film explores losing an elder matriarch, mirroring Winslet’s own mother’s passing from cancer several years ago.

According to What’s on Netflix, Winslet surrounded herself with familiar collaborators for this intimate project, including cinematographer Alwin H. Küchler from The Regime and former co-stars Helen Mirren and Andrea Riseborough.

The Story: Christmas Goodbyes and Family Healing

The film follows four adult siblings, their children, and their eccentric father as they gather when their mother June faces an unexpected health crisis just before Christmas. With time running short, the family must navigate complicated dynamics and unresolved feelings to give June the peaceful goodbye she deserves.

While the narrative leans heavily into sentimentality—think The Family Stone meets His Three Daughters—the performances elevate the material. Helen Mirren delivers an Oscar-worthy turn as June, conveying strength and grace while largely confined to a hospital bed. Johnny Flynn shines as Connor, the sensitive brother whose gentle nature anchors the emotional core.

What Works (and What Doesn’t)

Strengths:

• Helen Mirren’s powerhouse performance as June
• Johnny Flynn’s heartfelt portrayal brings authenticity
• Genuinely moving scenes that hit emotional peaks
• Cozy Christmas atmosphere perfect for holiday viewing
• Strong production values and cinematography

Weaknesses:

• Predictable plotting with rose-tinted wish fulfillment
• Some characters feel underdeveloped (particularly Toni Collette’s role)
• Sentimentality occasionally crosses into manipulation
• May lack realism for viewers seeking grittier family drama

Should You Watch It?

If you’re looking for a touching family drama during the holiday season and don’t mind some emotional manipulation, Goodbye June delivers where it counts. The film works best when viewed as a heartfelt tribute rather than a realistic portrayal of end-of-life care. Winslet’s direction shows promise, and her choice to honor her mother’s memory through cinema creates undeniable emotional resonance.

The 3.5/5 rating from critics suggests it’s above average—perfect for viewers who appreciate character-driven stories and aren’t afraid to reach for tissues. Just prepare for predictable beats and Christmas sentimentality wrapped around genuine performances.
