Starting October 1, 2025, Indian Railways has introduced a game-changing rule that will affect millions of train passengers. From October 1, anyone booking a general reserved ticket online in the first 15 minutes after bookings open will need to do Aadhaar verification. This move aims to curb ticket touts and ensure fair access for genuine passengers.
Table of Contents
Aadhaar Authentication Requirements Timeline
| Time Window | Booking Access | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| First 15 minutes | Aadhaar-authenticated users only | IRCTC + Aadhaar linked |
| After 15 minutes | All registered users | Standard IRCTC account |
| PRS Counters | No change | Physical booking unaffected |
| Authorized Agents | Existing 10-min restriction | No additional changes |
The new rule specifically targets the crucial first 15 minutes when maximum bookings happen, especially for popular trains and routes.
How to Link Aadhaar with IRCTC Account
Before October 1, ensure your IRCTC account is Aadhaar-authenticated:
- Login to your IRCTC website or mobile app
- Navigate to ‘My Profile’ section
- Select ‘Aadhaar Authentication’ option
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Verify using OTP sent to registered mobile
This measure aims to curb misuse and prioritize genuine passengers by allowing only Aadhaar-authenticated users on the IRCTC website or app to book during this crucial window.
What This Means for Train Passengers
The rule expansion significantly impacts regular train travel. The new rule is an expansion of an existing mandate that was limited to booking Tatkal rail tickets only. Now it covers all reserved general tickets during peak booking time.
Benefits:
- Reduced ticket touting and black marketing
- Fair access for genuine passengers
- Better crowd management on booking platform
What Remains Unchanged:
- The rule does not affect PRS counter timings or the existing 10-minute restriction for authorized agents
- Physical ticket booking at stations continues normally
- Booking after 15 minutes works as usual
This strategic move by Railways ensures that the most competitive booking window is reserved for verified Indian citizens with proper documentation.
