IPL Team Name Change: A name isn’t just a name in cricket. It’s an identity, a battle cry, a hundred thousand voices singing in unison at a stadium. So when an IPL franchise changes its name, it isn’t a minor admin update — it’s a statement. A reinvention. Sometimes, a desperate attempt at a fresh start.
In 19 editions of the Indian Premier League, six franchises have undergone name changes — each with a different story, a different reason, and a different outcome. Here’s the complete, storytelling guide to every IPL identity shift.

The Stories Behind Each Rebrand
Royal Challengers Bengaluru — Correcting History
This one was long overdue. In 2014, Bangalore officially changed its city name to Bengaluru. Following the civic rename, other sporting franchises in the city gradually updated their names — but RCB held on to “Bangalore” for nearly a decade before finally making the switch ahead of IPL 2024. The change wasn’t about crisis — it was about accuracy. And fittingly, it coincided with the beginning of their most successful era, culminating in their first IPL title in 2025.
Delhi Daredevils → Delhi Capitals — From Chaos to Credibility
Few rebrands have been as effective. Delhi Daredevils transformed into Delhi Capitals in 2019, retaining the same owners and players but signalling a fresh direction. The “Daredevils” identity had become synonymous with underperformance — decades of promise, never delivered. “Capitals” brought gravitas and purpose. Within two years, Delhi reached back-to-back IPL finals for the first time in franchise history.
Kings XI Punjab → Punjab Kings — Dropping the Royalty Act
Kings XI Punjab underwent the change to Punjab Kings in 2021, again with the same owners and core squad intact. The motivation was simpler here — streamlining the identity, modernising the brand, and dropping the convoluted “Kings XI” format that never quite made linguistic sense. Under their new name and with shrewd auction strategy, Punjab Kings have transformed into one of IPL 2026’s genuine title contenders — currently sitting at the top of the points table.
Deccan Chargers → Sunrisers Hyderabad — Phoenix from the Ashes
This is the most dramatic story of them all. The Sunrisers Hyderabad came into existence in 2013 following the termination of the Deccan Chargers franchise by the IPL — one of the most controversial exits in the league’s history. The ownership changed from Deccan Chronicle Holding Ltd. to SUN Group, while the players largely remained with the team. What rose from those ashes? A franchise that went on to win the IPL title in 2016 and build one of the league’s most fearsome batting lineups in 2024.
Rising Pune Supergiant(s) — The Smallest Change Ever Made
The Rising Pune Supergiants, who featured in just two IPL seasons as a replacement franchise, changed their name from the plural “Supergiants” to the singular “Supergiant” between their two seasons. Technically a rebrand. Practically, a proof-reader’s note that somehow became official. The franchise was discontinued after 2017 and never returned.
Kolkata Knight Riders — The Quickest U-Turn
After the inaugural IPL edition in 2008, KKR briefly experimented with dropping “Kolkata” and going simply by “Knight Riders.” They reverted almost immediately, returning to their full name for the 2010 season onwards. Shah Rukh Khan’s franchise realised fast that the city was the identity — and Kolkata wasn’t something you left behind.
What’s in a Name? Everything.
Every name change tells you something about what a franchise needed at that moment — credibility, modernity, a clean break from failure, or simply geographical accuracy. And in most cases, the rebrand worked. DC, Punjab Kings, and RCB have all found greater success under their new identities.
Six name changes. Six different stories. And in cricket — as in life — a fresh identity can sometimes be exactly the spark a team needs to finally become what it always had the potential to be.
