IPL 2026: CSK Sign Pacer Akash Madhwal as Replacement for Injured Ayush Mhatre

Chennai Super Kings have signed Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre, who has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to injury. Madhwal joins CSK for his base price of INR 30 lakh. The acquisition addresses CSK’s mounting injury crisis while providing the franchise with a proven wicket-taking option for the remainder of the season. The signing proved timely, as CSK delivered a commanding performance against Mumbai Indians on April 23, hammering them by 103 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

Official CSK Announcement

“Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush’s injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks. We wish Ayush a speedy recovery,” CSK said in a statement.

How Mhatre Suffered the Injury

Mhatre, who had come in as an Impact Sub for Gurjapneet Singh, walked out in the second over of CSK’s chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday night at the fall of Sanju Samson, and looked in excellent touch as he raced to 30 in 12 balls, when he stopped after running a two and clutched his hamstring. He flung off his helmet and looked in pain and needed attention from Tommy Simsek, the physiotherapist. Mhatre carried on after lengthy on-field treatment but was dismissed shortly after.

Ayush Mhatre’s IPL 2026 Stats Before Injury

Mhatre, India’s U19 World Cup-winning captain, made an impactful start to the season for CSK, scoring two fifties in six matches before suffering a left hamstring injury.

Who is Akash Madhwal?

Madhwal, a skiddy right-arm fast bowler from Uttarakhand, burst into the limelight in his debut season in 2023, when he picked up 14 wickets in eight matches for Mumbai Indians with an economy of 8.58. He also has a five-wicket haul to his name, having recorded sensational figures of 5/5 in his debut season for MI in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants. Madhwal, a right-arm fast bowler, has previously represented Mumbai Indians (MI) (2023, 2024) and Rajasthan Royals (2025). He has featured in 17 IPL matches, picking up 23 wickets.

Akash Madhwal’s IPL Career

Madhwal, who featured for MI from 2023 to 2024, went unsold in the IPL 2026 auction. 5 Madhwal has played 17 games in the IPL so far and has been part of the MI camp as a net bowler this season.

CSK’s Injury Crisis in IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings have suffered multiple setbacks in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season, with injuries disrupting their squad composition.

Mhatre is now the third CSK player after Nathan Ellis and Khaleel Ahmed to be ruled out of IPL 2026 after picking up an injury.

CSK’s Current Standing

A sensational individual effort with the bat from Sanju Samson was followed up with a brilliant team display with the ball as CSK hammered Mumbai Indians by 103 runs. It’s MI’s worst defeat in the IPL and also the first time they’ve slumped to three consecutive defeats at the Wankhede in a single season. Akeal Hosein led the carnage with a career-best IPL performance of 4/17, including a rare maiden over, which confused the MI middle order.

The win has fired CSK up to fifth, while Mumbai Indians’ momentum is halted after just one win. With this win, CSK now have six points and are fifth in the points table. The signing of Madhwal comes at a critical juncture for Chennai, as the team grapples with several personnel setbacks. Madhwal enters the CSK camp bringing valuable experience and an intimate understanding of IPL environments.
