In a major development, players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 will now be able to review wides and no-balls using the Decision Review System DRS. The Women’s Premier League 2023 (WPL 2023) became the first T20 league to allow players to use DRS to review wides and no-balls. The IPL has followed suit, and players can now request reviews for these decisions during matches.

  1. Wides and no-balls can now be reviewed using DRS: Players can now request reviews for any decision taken by the on-field umpires regarding wides and no-balls. This feature was first implemented in the WPL 2023 and has now been introduced in the upcoming IPL season.
  2. The two unsuccessful reviews per innings include wides and no-balls: Each team is allowed two unsuccessful reviews per innings. Players can now use these reviews to challenge wides and no-balls. It is important to note that leg-bye rulings are still not reviewable.
  3. Successful reviews have already been made in the WPL 2023: In the first two games of the WPL, players have already used this new feature. In the tournament opener between the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants, a wide decision was reversed after a successful DRS review. Similarly, Jemimah Rodrigues of the Delhi Capitals used a review to challenge an on-field umpire’s no-ball decision for height during a match against Megan Schutt.
  4. The rule change will make decisions more accurate: The introduction of this rule will ensure that decisions regarding wides and no-balls are more accurate. It will also be interesting to see how the roles of umpires change with the introduction of DRS for wides and no-balls.
  5. Controversies related to no-ball rulings in IPL: In the past, the IPL has faced controversies related to no-ball rulings based on height. MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, once exited the dugout during a match against the Rajasthan Royals in 2019 in response to Ben Stokes’ high full toss. Similar incidents occurred in another match between the Royals and Delhi Capitals in the previous season.

The introduction of DRS for wides and no-balls in IPL 2023 is a positive development for the game. It will not only make the decisions more accurate but also provide an interesting perspective on the roles of umpires in the game. We hope to see more such innovative changes in the future to make the game even more exciting!
