India’s Rocket League Squad Books Its Ticket to the World Stage

India just added another name to its growing esports resume. The national Rocket League team has qualified for the inaugural Esports Nations Cup (ENC) 2026, punching its ticket through a gritty run at the Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier.

How India Made It Through

Team India — Abhai Ponna (“Abscrazy”), Karthik Raghunandan (“Karvin”), Aditeya Srivastav (“Riyal”), and substitute Jayanth Engineer (“Jay”) — didn’t have a clean run to qualification, and that’s what makes it a good story. They opened with a dominant 3-0 win over Sri Lanka, then hit a wall, losing 1-4 to Maldives in the upper bracket semifinal. Facing elimination, the squad regrouped and won back-to-back series — beating Hong Kong 3-1 and then Bangladesh 4-1 — to claim one of the region’s three qualification spots. Coach Nirjhar Mitra, appointed through NODWIN Gaming, credited the team’s consistency and focus under pressure for turning the run around.

What’s at Stake in Riyadh

Rocket League at ENC 2026 runs November 2–8 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with 48 national teams chasing a USD 1.32 million prize pool (roughly ₹12.5 crore). The format starts with a round-robin group stage across eight groups, with the top two from each group advancing to a 16-team knockout bracket, capped off by a best-of-seven Grand Final.

India’s Bigger Esports Push

This qualification isn’t a standalone win — it’s part of a broader pattern. India has now secured spots across six titles at ENC 2026: BGMI, Chess, Honor of Kings, Rocket League, Trackmania, and VALORANT. Grandmaster Nihal Sarin qualified directly in Chess, while Mitrabha Guha, Kunal Upreti, and the VALORANT squad all earned their places through regional qualifiers. India’s MOBA: Legends 5v5 team is still in contention, with regional qualifiers set for August 15–16.

Rocket League itself has grown into one of esports’ most technically demanding titles since its release, as detailed on Wikipedia.
