India’s Money Is Getting a Plastic Makeover: Polymer ₹10 and ₹20 Notes Approved

Your wallet might look a little different soon. On July 27, 2026, the Government of India gave the green light to a Reserve Bank of India proposal to roll out one billion polymer banknotes each in the ₹10 and ₹20 denominations — a move that could change how everyday cash feels in your hands.

What’s Actually Changing in Money ?

Before anyone starts expecting plastic notes in their next transaction, here’s the catch: this approval only covers field trials. Regular issuance kicks in only after those trials succeed. The proposal was cleared under Section 25 of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, following a recommendation from the RBI Central Board.

Why Polymer Notes?

Unlike regular paper-pulp currency, polymer notes are printed on a plastic-based substrate. Countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK have used them for years thanks to their resistance to moisture, dirt, and tearing — plus a longer lifespan in circulation compared to paper notes.

India’s ₹10 and ₹20 denominations see heavy daily use in retail and public transport, making them a logical starting point for this shift. Ahead of the approval, Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited had already floated a Global Expression of Interest on July 17, 2026, for opacified polymer substrate sheets — the base material used in security printing.

Will Paper Notes Disappear?

Not anytime soon. The government has been clear: polymer notes will circulate alongside existing paper currency, with no plan to fully replace it. Any impact on digital payments will only be assessed once regular issuance actually begins.
