India’s Fab Four: Chess Grandmasters Storm Paris for Esports World Cup Glory

Indian chess just leveled up. Four Grandmasters — the biggest Indian squad ever assembled for the Esports World Cup (EWC) — are heading to Paris from August 11 to 15, chasing a slice of a prize pool north of INR 14.2 crore.

Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Pranesh M will fly the flag for S8UL Esports, while Arjun Erigaisi competes under the Gen.G Esports banner. It’s double the Indian presence from last year, when only Nihal and Arjun made the cut.

Chess Grandmasters: A Tougher, Bigger Format

EWC 2026 Chess brings a fresh two-phase structure. Nine Play-In qualifiers battle it out in a double-elimination bracket first. Survivors join the CCT-qualified pros in a 16-player Group Stage, split into two groups of eight — again double-elimination, two-game matches. Top four from each group march into single-elimination Playoffs, building toward a three-set Grand Final.

Standing in India’s way: defending champion Magnus Carlsen, along with Hikaru Nakamura, Alireza Firouzja, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Hans Moke Niemann — arguably chess‘s deepest competitive field outside a World Championship cycle.
