The result on Indian roads was entirely predictable — a severe diesel shortage hit the country, and truck operators needed an alternative fuel to keep goods moving across the subcontinent.

The solution they landed on was kerosene. Inexpensive, widely available, and just functional enough to run a truck engine. But it came with a terrifying catch.

Kerosene and Chaos on Indian Roads

Unlike diesel, kerosene is highly volatile. A collision, a spark, a side-swipe at highway speed — any of these could turn a truck into a fireball. Drivers and fleet owners needed other road users to stay alert, give space, and warn them before overtaking.

The solution was brilliantly simple: paint a warning on the back of every truck.

That original phrase told drivers behind to honk before overtaking — alerting the truck driver, who had limited visibility and was carrying volatile fuel.
