How India’s Chase Unravelled — Over by Over

South Africa’s bowlers executed a plan that was clear from ball one: attack the top order with pace, cutters, and off-spin variations.

Over 1 (Markram): Ishan Kishan, never comfortable against off-spin early, went for a slog and skied it to cover. Duck. For the 4th consecutive innings, India lose an opener without scoring.

Over 1.4 (Jansen): Tilak Varma — India’s in-form batter — walked down, made room, extra bounce caught a thin edge. de Kock pouched it cleanly. Tilak reviewed. UltraEdge confirmed the edge. OUT for 1. India 5/2 inside 2 overs. Ahmedabad went silent.

Over 6 (Rabada): Bright spot — Abhishek Sharma finally broke his T20 WC duck with a maximum over the keeper’s head, then added a boundary through covers. The crowd erupted. Momentum briefly shifted.

Over 7 (Jansen — knuckle ball): Jansen went back to the weapon that works. Knuckle ball. Abhishek didn’t pick it — hit it high, no distance. Bosch and Maharaj both converged, nearly collided, but Bosch held on. Abhishek gone for 15. India 31/3.

Over 8 (Bosch): Washington Sundar, promoted to stabilise, tried to punch through the covers off a short-of-length delivery angling away. Got an outside edge. Keeper grabbed it easily. 51/5.

The only positive in the wreckage? Suryakumar Yadav. Playing two signature, wristy boundaries off Jansen that had the crowd briefly believing again. But even SKY cannot win a T20 alone from 51/5 chasing 188 — he’ll need Hardik Pandya in the form of his life.
