India vs England 5th Test Day 4: Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow dominate, England need 119 to win

On the fourth day of the proceedings, rescheduled fifth Test match at Stumps, England turned the series around which was in India’s favour after the end of day 3. An undefeated 150-run partnership between Joe Root (76 not out) and Jonny Bairstow (72 not out) held the British in the driving seat against India.

After the hosts were reduced to 109/3, Root and Bairstow initially stabilized the ship before capitalizing on it to utterly disadvantage India. At Stumps on Monday, England were 259/3 and needed 119 more to win.

With a 107-run opening partnership, Lees and Crawley gave the team a dominating lead before the hosts lost three wickets in their second innings. Later, India had a chance with to Jasprit Bumrah’s two strikes and a run-out, but Root and Bairstow again held them at bay.

As they pursue a high total against India, the hosts look to history. India was bowled out for 245 runs in their second innings earlier on Monday, setting England a 378-run goal.

Cheteshwar Pujara led the way with 66 runs, and Rishabh Pant came in second with a 57-run performance. Ben Stokes’ bowling statistics were 4 for 33, while Matty Potts and Stuart Broad each took two wickets.

Notably, India had surpassed England in the match by scoring 132 runs in the first inning.
