Four matches. One goal. A World Cup berth already secured. And yet, the Women in Blue want more — tonight, at home, in front of their own crowd.

Sometimes a tournament produces a story that’s bigger than the trophies at stake. This week in Hyderabad, India’s women’s hockey team has been exactly that story — scrappy, spirited, and utterly compelling. And on Saturday, March 14, at the GMC Balayogi Hockey Ground, they step out for the final of the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Qualifiers 2026 against England, ranked three places above them at World No. 6.

The Journey That Got Them Here – FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifier Final

India are ranked World No. 9 while England come in at No. 6 — but rankings rarely tell the full story. India opened with a commanding 4–0 victory over Uruguay, then were held to a 2–2 draw by Scotland, before rallying with a 4–1 triumph over Wales to top Pool B. Navneet Kaur’s hat-trick in that Wales win announced her as the tournament’s standout forward.

Then came Friday’s semi-final — arguably India’s toughest test. India beat Italy 1-0 courtesy of Manisha Chauhan’s first goal of the tournament — a dragflick that deflected off the first rusher and then a further deflection off the Italian defender on the line before crawling over. Fortunate? Perhaps. But goalkeeper Bichu Devi and captain Salima Tete’s defensive discipline earned every inch of it.

Meanwhile, England booked their final spot with a 2-0 win over Scotland, thanks to first-half goals from Lottie Bingham and Darcy Bourne, recording their fourth clean sheet of the tournament. They’ve been the most complete team in Hyderabad all week.

India Have Already Won the Big Prize

Here’s the context that matters most. The Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 will be co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30. India have already confirmed their berth in the upcoming Women’s Hockey World Cup after qualifying by reaching the semi-finals. So tonight is purely about pride, silverware, and making a statement on home soil against the best team in the tournament.

England had the advantage of facing the best in the business in the FIH Women’s Pro League earlier this season, but India will fancy their chances of pulling off an upset win at home. Coach Sjoerd Marijne’s side has the crowd, the momentum, and a tournament’s worth of belief behind them.
