IND vs NZ: Mitchell’s Masterclass Powers Kiwis to 300 as India Face Steep Chase

New Zealand posted 300 runs in their 50 overs after Daryl Mitchell’s stunning knock rescued the visitors from a middle-order collapse at Vadodara’s historic Kotambi Stadium. India, led by returning captain Shubman Gill, now faces a challenging run chase with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli tasked with delivering a winning start to 2026.

IND vs NZ: Match Summary

How New Zealand Reached 300

1. Conway-Nicholls Opening Stand (117 runs)

Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls provided New Zealand with a rock-solid 117-run opening partnership, frustrating India’s six-bowler attack. Conway scored 56 off 67 balls with six fours and one six, while Nicholls contributed 62 off 69 deliveries with eight boundaries. The duo capitalized on dropped catches and India’s wayward initial spell.

2. India’s Fightback: Harshit Rana Strikes

Harshit Rana broke the opening stand by dismissing Nicholls, who edged to keeper KL Rahul. Rana struck again, removing Conway who chopped one onto his stumps. The young pacer emerged as India’s middle-overs specialist with crucial breakthroughs.

3. Middle-Order Wobble

Mohammed Siraj dismissed Will Young, caught behind by KL Rahul for 12, leaving New Zealand at 150/3 in 28 overs. Kuldeep Yadav added pressure by removing Glenn Phillips, caught by Shreyas Iyer for 12, and Prasidh Krishna bowled Mitchell Hay for 18.

4. Daryl Mitchell’s Rescue Act

When New Zealand needed stability, Daryl Mitchell delivered. He reached his fifty off 51 balls and counter-attacked brilliantly, backing away and muscling a length ball over long-on for six. Mitchell’s 84 provided the late-innings acceleration before Prasidh Krishna trapped him LBW, ending New Zealand’s innings at exactly 300.
