ICC T20 WC: India up against Pakistan; Australia and England in the group of death

The ICC T20 World Cup, which begins on October 17 in Oman and the United Arab Emirates, has paired Virat Kohli’s India with Babar Azam’s Pakistan in Group 2 of Super 12. New Zealand, led by Kane Williamson, is the other side of the group. Apart from two qualifiers, Australia and England are in the group of death with West Indies and South Africa.

For this year’s T20 World Cup in the Middle East, Australia has been grouped with England, South Africa, and the West Indies, as well as two yet-to-be-determined qualifiers. The ICC has announced the groupings for the men’s 20-over tournament’s seventh edition, which will feature two phases: the preliminary qualification round and the Super 12s.

Eight teams will compete in the first round, divided into two groups of four, who did not automatically qualify for the main event. The top two teams from each of these groups will advance to the Super 12 stage.  Group A includes Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Namibia, while Group B has Bangladesh, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, and Oman.

In the Super 12s, each group already has four teams who have qualified automatically owing to their high standing. In Group 1, Australia is joined by England, South Africa, and the West Indies, while in Group 2, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Afghanistan are the top-ranked teams.

The teams were chosen based on the ICC T20 standings as of March 20. In the Super 12s, the winner of Group A and the runner-up in Group B will join Group 1, while the winner of Group B and the runner-up in Group A will join Group 2. In the Super 12s, each team will face the other five teams in their group, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals.

The full schedule for the tournament, which will take place in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 14, will be released at a later date.
