I-League 2024/25: Dempo Strengthens Squad with Experienced Ivory Coast Midfielder Didier Brossou

Dempo SC, one of the former champions of the I-League, are showing strong intent to reinforce their squad in the ongoing January transfer window. With an eye on regaining their position in the league standings, the club has made an important acquisition. Didier Brossou, a 35-year-old Ivory Coast midfielder, joins Dempo from Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings, bringing much-needed experience to their midfield. This signing, along with other recent additions, indicates that Dempo is gearing up for a strong finish to the season.

Dempo’s Midfield Boost: Didier Brossou Joins the Squad

In a major move, Dempo SC has secured the services of Didier Brossou, a veteran of Bangladesh’s top football league. The Ivorian’s experience at clubs like Bashundhara Kings is expected to bolster Dempo’s midfield, offering both leadership and creativity.

As a player with international experience, Brossou is expected to make an immediate impact, helping guide Dempo’s young Indian players through the remainder of the season. Dempo CEO Pradhyum Reddy expressed his confidence in the new addition, stating, “Didier Brossou brings a wealth of experience having previously plied his trade for top Bangladesh side Bashundhara Kings.”

Further Reinforcements: Lukman Adefemi Also Registered

Along with Brossou, Dempo has also bolstered their attack by registering Nigerian forward Lukman Adefemi, who previously played for Real Kashmir FC. Adefemi’s inclusion adds further depth to Dempo’s offensive lineup.

His pace and physicality will provide a fresh dimension to their forward play, particularly in the crucial away matches. Dempo’s attack now looks more versatile with the addition of Adefemi, and he could be key in helping the team return to the top positions in the I-League.

A Season of Mixed Results: Dempo’s Struggles So Far

Dempo SC’s season has been a roller-coaster ride. Despite starting strong with a good run that placed them second in the standings, the club experienced a series of setbacks that saw them slip down the table. From 10 points in their first six away games, Dempo’s fortunes changed after a heartbreaking loss at home to Inter Kashi, where they conceded a late goal. Further setbacks followed, including injuries to key players. Argentine midfielder Damian Perez pulled his hamstring, and Serbian defender Matija Babovic left the club for Kashi. These departures left Dempo with just one foreign player in their squad, Syrian centre-back Shaher Shaheen.

The Importance of Young Indian Talent

While the club’s foreign players struggled with injuries and departures, Dempo’s young Indian midfielders have proven themselves to be a bright spot this season. Despite the challenges, the Indian players have shown maturity and resilience in their debut season.

CEO Pradhyum Reddy acknowledged their efforts, commenting, “Our young Indian midfielders have done exceptionally well in their debut season and will benefit from having the experience of our new foreign addition.” With Brossou’s arrival, these young players now have the opportunity to learn from someone with extensive international experience, which should improve their performance as the season progresses.

Looking Ahead: Dempo Eyes More Signings

Dempo SC is not resting on their laurels and is already looking to strengthen the squad further. The club is in talks with two additional foreign players, including Spaniard Juan Mera. Mera, who was previously with Churchill Brothers FC but left due to a lack of playing time, could add much-needed versatility to Dempo’s attacking options. His creativity and playmaking skills could be a game-changer, especially with the current squad aiming to climb back into the top five positions.

Dempo’s Path to Revival

With a new set of reinforcements in the squad, including the highly experienced Didier Brossou and Lukman Adefemi, Dempo SC has the tools to mount a strong challenge for the remainder of the I-League season.

Their current position in the standings may be far from ideal, but a victory in their upcoming match could set them on the path to recovery. If the new signings gel well with the young Indian players, Dempo could soon find themselves climbing back up the table and regaining their former glory.
