The Pongal 2026 box office is heating up with an unprecedented clash between two Tamil cinema heavyweights. Actor Sivakarthikeyan has finally broken his silence about his upcoming film Parasakthi releasing alongside Thalapathy Vijay’s swan song Jana Nayagan, revealing his initial shock and the heartwarming resolution that followed.

Sivakarthikeyan Film Details

Film	Release Date	Director	Significance
Jana Nayagan	January 9, 2026	H. Vinoth	Vijay’s final film
Parasakthi	January 10, 2026	Sudha Kongara	Historical drama

The Unexpected Clash

Speaking at Parasakthi’s pre-release event, Sivakarthikeyan revealed his team initially planned a Diwali 2025 release but postponed it to avoid clashing with Jana Nayagan. However, when both productions shifted to Pongal, the actor admitted feeling genuinely shocked by the coincidence.

“We decided against [Diwali] and continued working on our film, keeping Pongal in mind,” Sivakarthikeyan explained, noting his concern about releasing alongside what’s being promoted as Vijay’s farewell to cinema.

A Gracious Resolution

What happened next showcases the camaraderie within Tamil cinema. Sivakarthikeyan reached out to Vijay’s manager Jagadish, expressing concerns about the simultaneous release. The response demonstrated Thalapathy Vijay’s legendary generosity.

Vijay conveyed through his manager that both films have sufficient space during the festive season and wouldn’t negatively impact each other’s performance. He even sent his best wishes for Parasakthi.

Why The Clash Couldn’t Be Avoided

Sivakarthikeyan explained the logistical challenges that made postponement impossible. Investors had been informed about the Pongal release, and delaying further would push the film to summer 2026—coinciding with the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, creating another scheduling nightmare.

What Makes Pongal 2026 Special

Both films carry significant weight. Jana Nayagan marks Vijay’s transition from cinema to full-time politics with his TVK party, while Parasakthi is set in 1960s Madras during the peak of civil disobedience, exploring themes of societal turmoil and unity.

After his blockbuster success with Amaran, Sivakarthikeyan has solidified his position in Tamil cinema’s big league, making this clash even more intriguing for audiences.

A Festival of Cinema

Sivakarthikeyan’s closing message to fans was simple yet powerful: “Everyone, please go watch and enjoy Jana Nayagan on January 9 and celebrate it. We are talking about a man who has entertained us for 33 years. Then, on January 10, come and watch Parasakthi and celebrate that too.”
