If you thought Dear X couldn’t get darker, episodes 7 and 8 just proved you wrong. The psychological thriller takes a heartbreaking turn as romance crumbles, secrets explode, and one character pays the ultimate price. Spoiler alert: these episodes will leave you emotionally wrecked.
What Happened in Dear X Episodes 7-8?
Episode seven opens with Ah-jin kissing In-gang while Jae-oh films, followed by their romance going public through Reporter Lim. The relationship between the manipulative actress and the idol-turned-actor seems genuine—until everything falls apart.
In-gang receives a call that his grandmother discovered her missing diary at Ah-jin’s house, and he asks Ah-jin to check on her. When Ah-jin arrives with Jae-oh, they hear a thud and find the grandmother at the bottom of the stairs, motionless.
Episode eight confirms the worst: the grandmother dies despite medical efforts, and In-gang is consumed by grief at the funeral. The loss becomes even more tragic when Ah-jin, focused on her rising career and an upcoming film adaptation, breaks up with In-gang and reveals she manipulated their entire relationship using the stolen diary.

Did Ah-jin Kill the Grandmother?
The short answer: No. CCTV footage retrieved by Jun-seo reveals the grandmother’s death was truly an accident—she lost her balance while trying to show Ah-jin a kitten outside the door. The elderly woman had actually forgiven Ah-jin and treated her like family.
However, the damage is done. The loss and Ah-jin’s cold manipulation push In-gang into a spiral. Mi-ri finds In-gang the next morning after bringing hangover soup—he has taken his own life in the bathtub.
Is Heo In-gang Really Dead?
Yes, tragically. In-gang takes his own life after Ah-jin breaks up with him and tells him that his grandmother died from shock after learning about Ah-jin’s manipulation. The character’s death marks one of the most devastating moments in the series, proving that Ah-jin’s ruthless ambition leaves real casualties in its wake.
Mi-ri, devastated by In-gang’s death, leaks Ah-jin’s father’s death story to Reporter Lim in retaliation.
What Makes These Episodes So Powerful
The chemistry between Kim Yoo-jung and Hwang In-yeop creates genuine emotional investment, making In-gang’s death hit harder. The series excels at showing how manipulation destroys lives—not through dramatic confrontations, but through calculated coldness.
At the end of episode 8, a flashback reveals that while feeding a kitten, the grandmother collapsed, and Ah-jin failed to save her, erasing the small human warmth Ah-jin briefly had.

Why did In-gang’s grandmother die in Dear X?
The grandmother’s death was a tragic accident, not murder. She lost her balance and fell down the stairs while trying to show Ah-jin a kitten at the doorstep. The CCTV footage confirmed she had genuinely forgiven Ah-jin and considered her family. However, Ah-jin’s later revelation to In-gang twisted the truth, claiming the grandmother died from shock upon discovering the manipulation.
