Want to unlock the exclusive Zombie Horse Cape in Minecraft? You’re in luck! Mojang is celebrating the Mounts of Mayhem game drop with a limited-time challenge where players can earn this unique cosmetic item absolutely free. Here’s everything you need to know to claim yours before time runs out.
What is the Zombie Horse Cape Challenge?
The Spear Mayhem Challenge runs from December 12, 2025, 8:00 AM PT to December 15, 2025, 10:00 AM PT. This gives players just three days to complete the challenge and earn the cape, which features an eerie undead-themed design with exposed bones that matches the game’s new zombie horse mounts.
The cape works on both Bedrock and Java editions when linked to your Microsoft account, making it a versatile cosmetic addition to your Minecraft wardrobe.

The Challenge
To earn the Zombie Horse Cape, you need to eliminate five mobs using the spear in a survival world on the Bedrock edition. Here’s how:
Step 1: Craft a Spear
The spear is a new tiered weapon added in the Mounts of Mayhem drop. Craft one using this recipe:
| Crafting Grid | Materials Needed |
|---|---|
| Top Row: Empty, Empty, Material | Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold, or Diamond |
| Middle Row: Empty, Stick, Empty | 1 Stick |
| Bottom Row: Stick, Empty, Empty | 1 Stick |
Start with a basic Wooden Spear for quick completion—you don’t need fancy materials to complete the challenge!
Step 2: Enter Survival Mode
Load or create a Survival world with cheats disabled. You can play solo or with friends in multiplayer—both count toward the challenge.
Step 3: Defeat 5 Mobs
Hunt down any five hostile or passive mobs and eliminate them using your spear. The spear features unique jab and charge attacks, making combat exciting and effective. Target zombies, skeletons, spiders, or any mob you encounter.
Step 4: Wait for Your Reward
Once you’ve completed the challenge, the cape automatically applies to your account within approximately 30 days post-event, arriving around mid-January 2026. Check the Character Creator (Bedrock) or Java cape menu to view your new cosmetic.
