Liverpool’s signing of Cody Gakpo came out of nowhere. The Dutchman was seemingly close to signing for Manchester United, before the Merseyside club sent in an official bid and got the deal over the line.
PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that they will be selling their star player to the Reds. But, they have refrained from commenting on the transfer fee despite confirming that it is a record sale for them. According to Fabrizio Romano, the move is worth £37 million up-front, and £13 million in the form of add-ons.
How can Cody Gakpo help Liverpool in the second half of the season?
Last year, it was the arrival of Luis Diaz that really helped Jurgen Klopp’s side gain the pace in the second half of the campaign. This time around, it could be Cody Gakpo who provides the team with a much needed boost.
Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah are the only two forwards available right now. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have been sidelined with injuries, and the arrival of Gakpo has been mainly due to the battles with injury.
The Dutchman has been in sensational form since the start of the season, and was also impressive at the 2022 World Cup. He mainly plays out on the left, but could also play through the centre which can be a great positive for a team that also has a versatile forward like Nunez.
Since he is young, he will be able to adapt to a variety of roles that Klopp could want him to play. And that is a huge boost for the Reds, who are short on fit attackers right now.
