House of the Dragon Just Gave Aemond His Own Daemon Arc — and Alys Rivers Is the Key to Everything

One of the most fascinating story moves in House of the Dragon Season 3 isn’t happening in King’s Landing — it’s unfolding in the cursed halls of Harrenhal. And it all comes down to one mysterious woman: Alys Rivers.

House of the Dragon: The Daemon–Aemond–Alys Triangle: Quick Breakdown

How Aemond Inherited Daemon’s Story

After Daemon left Harrenhal to help Rhaenyra take King’s Landing in Season 3, Aemond took Vhagar to claim the stronghold — though with far more bloodshed. After killing Simon Strong and his sons, Aemond ended Episode 2 severely wounded, begging Alys Rivers to help save his life.

The parallel is intentional and striking. Both Daemon and Aemond — proud, violent, deeply complicated second sons of their respective families — have now ended up wounded and vulnerable at Harrenhal, at the mercy of the same enigmatic woman.

What Alys Really Thinks of Aemond vs. Daemon

This is where it gets genuinely fascinating. In an interview, Alys Rivers actor Gayle Rankin broke down the key difference between the two relationships:

While Alys saw Daemon as a figure who could help her rise in power at Harrenhal, she sees Aemond as a different person entirely. She feels a more emotional, personal connection to Aemond immediately upon seeing him. Rankin revealed that Alys “has an experience when she meets him and she doesn’t understand her own feelings — and that’s scary for her.”

Rankin also noted that “in Episode 1, Daemon lets Alys down in a huge, huge way — they have a kind of breakup — and I think that leaves an opening for a different kind of male relationship.” ScreenRant

Is Aemond Really in Control of Harrenhal?

Rankin also suggests that Aemond hasn’t actually taken over Harrenhal despite killing the remaining members of House Strong — because Alys herself is still standing. It was implied that Alys was among the more powerful figures working from the shadows at Harrenhal even before Daemon arrived. ScreenRant

In other words — the one-eyed prince who thought he was conquering a castle may have walked straight into something far more dangerous than a war.

The parallels between Daemon and Aemond run deep — both are defined by the curse of being the brilliant, brutal “second son” in their family’s shadow, a theme central to House Targaryen throughout the entire Dance of the Dragons.
