Hope (2026): A Cannes-Bound Sci-Fi Thriller That’ll Redefine Korean Cinema This July 15

What happens when a remote village near the DMZ faces a tiger sighting that becomes something terrifyingly extraterrestrial? Director Na Hong Jin (“The Chaser,” “The Yellow Sea,” “The Wailing”) just answered that question with “HOPE,” a film invited to the main competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival, starring Hwang Jung Min, Zo In Sung, and Jung Ho Yeon. On June 23, 2026, the three-time Cannes-goer revealed why this project kept them up at night—and why you need to see it on July 15.

The Plot: Tiger Sighting Becomes Cosmic Nightmare

The story follows Bum Seok (Hwang Jung Min), the chief of a police substation in Hopo Port near the DMZ. After local youths report a tiger sighting, Bum Seok and the entire village face an unimaginable reality when a young hunter named Sung Ki (Zo In Sung) is sent to track the creature that attacked.

But here’s where it pivots: This isn’t a wildlife thriller. It’s a sci-fi examination of how we view unfamiliar life forms—both alien and human. What begins as a village emergency spirals into something cosmic.

What the Cast Revealed in Their ELLE Korea Interview

Hwang Jung Min’s Paradox: “It was very refreshing to see a familiar setting, like a rural Korean village, coexist with an unfamiliar extraterrestrial being.” He’s describing the genius of Na Hong Jin’s approach: grounding the otherworldly in the mundane.

Jung Min added: “The way the massive scale blends with characters who feel so ordinary is also fascinating. ‘HOPE’ is not simply about chasing and being chased. The way we view these alien life forms ultimately reflects how we view unfamiliar beings in our own world today.”

Translation? This isn’t a creature-feature horror film. It’s social commentary wrapped in alien invasion.

Zo In Sung’s Intensity:The actor explained: “To create something we’d never seen before, all the actors and crew mustered their courage and tried everything without regret. Hope does not come to those who do nothing. It comes to those who give their best, those who desperately hold on, and those who strive until the very end.”

That’s not just acting philosophy—that’s the film’s entire thesis.

Jung Ho Yeon’s Dream Role: Playing police officer Sung Ae, Jung Ho Yeon expressed: “I still remember the day I first received the script. Right after reading it, I wrote my name under the title ‘HOPE.’ I was honored to ultimately become ‘Sung Ae.’ Hwang Jung Min and Zo In Sung showed me firsthand how an actor should behave on set.”

This is an actress talking about her dream project—which signals the script is something special.

The Director: Why Na Hong Jin’s Track Record Matters

Na Hong Jin doesn’t make simple films. He makes films that haunt you philosophically. HOPE continues that tradition.
