A Fierce Final: Pakistan Struggles to Set a Target

Opting to bat first, Pakistan faced early setbacks as Sri Lanka’s bowling attack tore through the top order, reducing Pakistan to 51-5 within four overs. Muhammad Akhlaq’s impressive 48 off 20 balls was a lone standout performance, briefly reviving Pakistan’s innings after early losses. Despite his resilience, Pakistan was bowled out for a modest 72 in just 5.2 overs, failing to utilize their full six over quota, a rare and costly misstep in the Sixes format.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Dhananjaya Lakshan and Tharindu Rathnayake, each claimed two wickets and kept Pakistan’s batters under tight pressure. The disciplined bowling and early breakthroughs left Pakistan scrambling to build momentum, but their struggles eventually cost them, setting Sri Lanka a relatively low target of 73 runs.

Sri Lanka’s Chase: A Nerve Wracking Path to Victory

Chasing 73, Sri Lanka began confidently with Sandun Weerakkody, the tournament’s star batter, setting the pace. Weerakkody’s quick fire 34 off 13 balls, which included four sixes, laid a strong foundation. However, a mix up led to the run out of Dhananjaya Lakshan, sparking some tension in the Sri Lankan camp.

Captain Lahiru Madushanka added a valuable 19 off just 5 balls, momentarily easing the pressure. However, Pakistan’s bowlers fought back, taking quick wickets to keep the game alive. It was Tharindu Rathnayake who ultimately sealed the win for Sri Lanka, finishing with a six and a four to end the innings at 73/3 with an over to spare. Rathnayake’s composure and strategic hitting at the end marked the climax of an intense finale.
