What Is Holika Dahan & Why It Matters

Holika Dahan is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated the night before Holi. It involves lighting a bonfire that symbolises the burning of the demoness Holika and represents the victory of good over evil. The ritual is deeply rooted in Hindu lore and celebrates unwavering devotion — teaching lessons of courage and righteousness.

This ceremony brings families and communities together to pray for peace, harmony, and prosperity. It also marks the start of spring and the joyful colour‑filled Holi the next day.

Holika Dahan & Lunar Eclipse (Chandra Grahan)

In 2026, a lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) overlaps Holika Dahan, making traditional timing more complex. According to religious customs:

Sutak Kaal, an inauspicious period before and during the eclipse, discourages major rituals.
Bhadra Kaal also affects auspicious timings around March 2–3.
Most practitioners choose to wait until after the eclipse ends (~06:47 PM) to light the Holika fire.

This ensures the ritual is aligned with tradition while avoiding prohibited periods.
