The midpoint of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 just delivered its most gut-wrenching twist — and fans are still recovering. Episode 5, “Furusato,” isn’t just a monster spectacle. It’s a devastating family tragedy wrapped around a high-tech catastrophe.
Here’s everything you need to know about the ending.
What Happened at Santa Soledad?
Apex Cybernetics attempted to control Titan X (also known as Co-Cai) using a neural implant at Santa Soledad, deploying a drone to inject the device and activate May’s control code. The system briefly connected but failed to handle the Titan’s neural complexity, causing a feedback loop — the site was destroyed and the implant severed, ending all control.
In plain terms: Apex rushed an unfinished experiment, and it blew up in their face — literally.

Did Apex Lose Control of Titan X?
Yes — completely. The inhibitor chips were not powerful enough for a kaiju as large as Titan X. The beast actively resisted control, and hundreds of scarabs helped cut off the affected tentacle, freeing Co-Cai.
Lee had warned that any technology capable of protecting Titans could also be weaponized — a statement that eerily foreshadows Godzilla vs. Kong. Apex ignored that warning and paid the price.
Hiroshi’s Death — The Emotional Core
As Titan X’s tentacle collapsed toward Cate, Hiroshi pushed her out of the way — but couldn’t save himself. He slowly passed away in the arms of his mother Keiko and daughter Cate, as the three sang the Japanese lullaby “Furusato” together — the same song Hiroshi had once sung to baby Cate over the phone.
It’s one of the most human moments the MonsterVerse has ever produced.
